Raymond C. DeSotel, 84, Monona, Iowa, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Mulder Health Care Systems, West Salem, WI. Ray was born on November 30, 1926, in Monona, Iowa to parents Charles and Abbie DeSotel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Ray received his entire education at the Monona Public School, graduating from high school in 1944.
Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and served for two years in the Pacific, Hawaii, and Japan. After his discharge he returned to Monona and worked for the Monona Creamery, the Volga Creamery, Huinker Chevrolet, and then Wirkler Brothers Plumbing and Heating. Later he served as Monona city manager, one term as mayor and then served several terms as councilman. He also worked at Norplex in Postville where he remained until his retirement in February 1991. Ray's favorite pleasures were woodworking, bowling, golf and spending time with his family. He was a patriotic man and loved his country and his hometown of Monona.
On August 6, 1948 Ray was married to Darlene Kadlec at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Three children were born to them.
Ray served his church as councilman and usher, his community as scoutmaster of Troop 38 for 20 years, and was a member of the fire department for 15 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one grandson, Jeremy Hamann.
Surviving besides his wife are his children, Linda (James Hamann) of Fair Oaks California, Scott (Kathryn) of Bay Point California, Daniel (Katherine) of West Salem, Wisconsin, and his grandchildren, Justin Hamann, Justin Kenter (Becky), Brian Kenter, Brandon Kenter, Matthew (Kristy), and 5 great-grandchildren.
Pall bearers are Justin Hamann, Matthew DeSotel, Justin Kenter, Brian Kenter, and Brandon Kenter. Honorary pall bearers are Dean Schultz, Bob Jacobson, Roger and Ruth Swanson, Lloyd and Marjorie Drahn, Lorin and Phyllis Dettman, Roger and Pat Martin, and Marion Wirkler.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa. The Rev. Scott Duffus will officiate.
Burial will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona, Iowa, with military honors.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, from 3-7 p.m. at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
