Rolan Heins

Funeral services for Rolan Heins were held Saturday, April 26, 1997 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. Elizabeth Yates officiated. The Rev. Albert Hock gave the message. Joann Martins was the organist and special music was provided by Debbie Matt and Steffen Heins. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Rolan Louis Heins, the son of Fred John and Anna Nuehring Heins, was born March 16, 1917 on the Heins home farm in Postville Township, Allamakee County, northwest of Postville, Iowa. He was the sixth of nine children born to Fred and Anna. Rolan died Wednesday, April 23, 1997 in the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. He was 80.

He was baptized May 6, 1917 by the Rev. E. Schmidt and confirmed August 11, 1929 by the Rev. E. F. Fink, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. He attended the Empire School in Post Township and the Postville Community School.

He married Irene Emma Welzel on June 15, 1936 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. They had five children. Rolan farmed all of his life. Following their marriage they farmed on the Welzel-Heins-Radloff Century farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton Count from 1936-1964. Finally, they moved to the Heins-Voss Farm in Grand Meadow Township where they lived from 1964-1994. Because of his failing health, Rolan became a resident of the Elkader Care Facility in December of 1994.

During his lifetime, Rolan served on the Board of the Farmer's Cooperative at Clermont, was a leader for over ten years of the Grand Meadow Go-Getters 4-H Club, a director of the McKinnley School for many years and was a member of the Farm Bureau for many years. He was a Justice of the Peace for Grand Meadow Township for several terms. Rolan received numerous awards for growing corn and raising hogs.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Joseph Dale Heins who died in 1970 and Thomas Lauren Heins who died in 1956; 2 sisters, Edna Eberling and Aurelia Schultz; 4 brothers, two of whom died in infancy, Carl Heins (twin to Harlen) and Clarence Heins; Harlen C. D. Heins and Luther Heins; a grandchild, Jody Ann Voss and a son-in-law, Lavern Hoins.

Surviving are his wife, Irene of Elkader; a son, Milo of Postville; 2 daughters, Janet Hoins of Waverly, Iowa and Myra (Bernard "Bud") Voss of Elkader and daughter-in-law, Valetta (Harley) Radloff, Jr., of Postville; 11 grandchildren, Michael R. Heins, David K. Heins, Christina Heins Pierce, Steffen R. Heins, Angela R. Heins, Debbie Matt, Denise Lasley, Deanna Arendt, Darren J. Radloff, Beth Voss Kuehl, Kris M. Voss and 2 step-grandchildren, Loreili Dilly and Lanesa Osgood; 15 great grandchildren, Danielle, Brittany and Kelsey Heins, Leesa, Megan and Ashley Matt, Andrew and Heather Pierce, Logan and Lindsey Lasley, Alysa and Kevin Palma, Sydney Radloff, Jonathan and Kaylee Arendt and 6 step great grandchildren.

Also surviving are 2 sisters, Romilda (Kenneth) Koth of Postville and Marcella Milliren of Chisago City, Minn. and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Heins of Thornton, Colo. and Martha Heins of Postville.

Rolan was a lifetime member of St. Paul Luther Church, Postville.

Casket bearers were the grandchildren.
