Vern Edward Hupfer

Vern Edward Hupfer, son of Edward and Clara (Schmitt) Hupfer, was born Dec. 31, 1903 at Monona, IA. He attended the Monona School. He went to Lane Technical School in Chicago during the mid-1930's to learn carpentry.

Vern was united in marriage to Velma Clark on June 27, 1939 at Monona. On April 9, 1955 he married Amanda Schultz at Ossian, IA. Vern built over 50 homes in Monona and took a great in his farms. He retired from carpentry in 1965. Vern was Mayor of Monona from 1958 to 1963. He owned the Gunder I. G. A. Grocery Store. Vern was a past member of the Brotherly Love Lodge 204 and member for over 50 years, and was on the Civil Service Commission. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Vern died Wednesday, October 23, 1996 at his home in Monona. He had reached the age of 92 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 26, 1996 at 11 a.m. at Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, with Dr. Gary Dobbins officiating. He was laid to rest at Monona City Cemetery, Monona. Schultz's Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were: Doug Baade, Dale Henning, Emil Schultz, Bernell Kliefoth, Eugene Baade, Ronald O. Mueller and Tony Mueller.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wives, Velma, who died in 1953, and Amanda, who died June 3, 1995; two brothers, Herb and Raymond, and two sisters, Mabel Franck and Marie Baade.

Survivors include a daughter JoAnn (Conley) Schweinefus of Hiawatha, IA; a son Ed (Jean) Hupfer of Clinton, IA; two grandchildren, Connee Jo Larsen and Luyre Hupfer; one great grandson, Christopher Larsen, and a host of other relatives and friends.
