At five o'clock on Monday February 11, 1901, occured the death of John Hofer, at his home in Elgin, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday February 13, and interment was at the Dunkard cemetery southeast of Elgin.
On Thursday, Feb. 7, Mr. Hofer went to Elkader and on endeavoring to alight from his wagon at his return home he fell sustaining internal injuries from the effect of which he died on February 11.
John Hofer was born in Marion township, Clayton county, Iowa, Sept. 15, 1878 [sic] and was just past twenty seven years of age at the time of his death. He was the son of Nick Hofer. Six years ago he was married to Miss Solom Freiden and two children were born to them, who with the wife, now mourn his early death.
John Hofer was an industrious and honest man. He was a good father and neighbor and everyone who knew him held him as a friend, for his was a sunny and cheerful disposition. He always had a pleasant word for those whom he met and was generous to a fault. In the death of him Elgin has lost a good citizen and true friends mourn

Note: His gravestone in Apostolic / Dunkard Cemetery in Clayton County shows he was born in 1874. The date is very clear on his gravestone.
