Last Saturday evening Nick Hofer, who lives four miles east of Elgin, was instantly killed while on his way home from town. He had come in to do his Saturday's trading and left town about six o'clock. Three miles out there is a big mud hole in the road and to avoid this a road had been cut in the hillside. It was quite dark by the time Mr. Hofer got to this bad place in the road and he drove a little too far up on the hillside which caused his wagon to tip over throwing him out and the wagon box upside down on top of him with the edge of the box across his head and feet in which position he was found by John Buetikofer who had left town about twenty minutes later than Mr. Hofer. It seems the team had not moved after the wagon was overturned for they were standing quietly near the road. Buetikofer went to John Gehring's and got assistance to take the remains home. Mrs. Hofer was visiting at West Bend at the time of the accident, but was telegraphed for and arrived home Monday.
Nick Hofer was fifty-six years of age and leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his untimely death. He was loved and respected by all his acquaintances. Funeral services were held at the Dunkard church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Schuepbach and interment made in the Dunkard cemetery.
