Funeral services were held for Leighton Henry Schlake at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. Schutte Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Minert Cemetery, rural Postville, Iowa. Casket bearers were Bernald Martins, Virgil Martins, Lew Schrandt, Roger Radloff, Verdine Houg, and George Wander.

Leighton Henry Schlake was the son of John J. and Caroline "Carrie" (Loeske) Schlake. He was born January 27, 1910 at Guttenberg, Iowa. He was baptized by Pastor Janzig and confirmed on May 20, 1923 by Rev. Finck. He attended the schools at Guttenberg, Iowa where he graduated on May 24, 1928. On October 24, 1934 he was married to Hazel Meyer in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, Iowa. They were the parents of 2 children. They farmed in the Guttenberg and Postville, Iowa areas until their retirement when they moved to their present home in Postville. Leighton became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville on November 1, 1995. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa.

Leighton died March 5, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center at the age of 86 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters, Bernadine Hagen and Bernita Schrandt.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel of Postville; 1 daughter, Mary (Carroll) Kamin of Milford, Illinois and 1 son Dennis (Linda) Schlake of Montrose, Colorado; 5 grandchildren, Brenda (Lynn) Reiners, Dawn (Glenn) Block, Rachel Schlake, Brian Westerberg, and Wendy Schwartz; 2 great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Stephanie Reiners; and a sister, Faye Vorwald of Garnavillo, Iowa.
