Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Mabel Mathilda Bergan were held Friday, November 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Iowa. Rev. William Palmquist officiated. Burial was in the Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural St. Olaf, Iowa. Casket bearers were Kevin Harbaugh, Jason Hochhausen, Scott Yoerger, Steve Hochhausen, Quinn Kirschbaum, and Scott Vogt.
Mabel Mathilda, daughter of Olaf and Lettie (Malumquist) Ruroden was born December 1, 1904 at Brookings, South Dakota. She moved with her family onto a farm near Elgin, Iowa at the age of two. She attended Spring Valley rural School #9. Mabel was confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Elkader, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Charles H. Bergan on June 25, 1925. Three children were born to this union. They farmed near Gunder, Iowa for a while, moving then to Guttenberg, Iowa. In 1949 they moved to Cassville, Wisconsin where they owned and operated the Good Samaritan Home. Upon retiring in 1965, they moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Charles died on June 9, 1968. At this time Mabel returned to Cassville where she remained. After a short time in the Memorial Hospital at Lancaster, Wisconsin, Mabel died there on November 5, 1991. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Cassville, Wisconsin.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cecelia Harbaugh in 1984, 2 grandchildren, Douglas Hochhausen in 1973 and Constance Harbaugh in 1975; and 2 brothers, Lloyd Ruroden and Maynard Ruroden.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Eloise (Laverne P.) Kirschbaum and Mrs. Mavin Hochhausen, both of Cassville, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Agnes (Howard) Barnes of Monona, Iowa, Alvina Halvorson of Clermont, Iowa, and Lila (Elmer) Rodas of Littleport, Iowa.
