Mary Ann (West) Cook, daughter of William and Elizabeth West, was born in Clayton county, February 1, 1873. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Margery in Elgin, Wednesday morning, June 23, 1948 at the age of 75 years.
Her childhood was spent on the home farm with her parents in Clayton county. She attended the Elkader public schools and later taught in the rural schools of Clayton county for two years.
On September 10, 1891, she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Cook. To this union seven children were born, three boys and four girls. Mr. and Mrs. Cook settled on the Cook homestead in Marion township, Clayton county. Here she resided for 43 years.
In the fall of 1936 she moved to Elgin where she established a home. Four years ago she was stricken with arthritis and moved to the home of her daughter, Margery, where she had the constant and loving care of a devoted daughter through her years of illness. She was a devoted mother, never tiring in doing for her family. She was always alert and took great interest in current affairs. She had a host of friends who will miss her kindly smile. She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Elgin, and was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1934 and by a son Newell in infancy. She leaves to mourn her passing, her six children, Alfred and Merlin, living on the Cook farms; (Gladys) Mrs. William Wenger of Volga; (Margery) Mrs. Charles Wenger and (Inez) Mrs. B.H. Brackin both of Elgin; (Hazel) Mrs. Reuben Wirkler of Monona. Also four sisters, Mrs. J.J. Boland, Amber; Mrs. R.P. Schuld, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Charlotte Feller, Elkader; Mrs. Anne Boland, Glen Ellen, Calif.; and two brothers, Ab West, Elgin and Ed West, Elkader; 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday afternoon, June 26, at the Methodist church, Rev. Bruce Jones officiating. The pallbearers were six grandsons, William, Clyde and Russell Wener; Merton and James Cook and Harrison Brackin. Interment was in East Side cemetery at Elkader.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Schuld, Minneapolis, Minn.; J.J. Boland and son Roy, of Amber, and Cletus of Springville.
