Andrew J. Cook, a life-long resident of Clayton county, died Tuesday evening, January 23, at his home in Marion township, after a period of declining health due to heart trouble.
He was born sixty-eight years ago on the 23rd of Dec., on the farm where he died, and where his parents had settled in 1848. He was the son of Henry and Mary Bachman Cook.
On Sept. 10, 1891, he married Mary Ann West in Elkader. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Alfred William of Highland township, and Andrew Merlin Cook, who is running the home farm, and four daughters, Gladys (Mrs. William Wenger) of Volga City, Margery (Mrs. Chas. Wenger) of Elgin, Inez (Mrs. B.H. Brackin) of Elgin, and Hazel (Mrs. Reuben Wirkler) of Monona. A third son, Newell Henry, died in infancy. He is also survived by a brother and a sister of Flandreau, S.D., Max M. Cook and Mary L. Cook; and fourteen grandchildren.
He was a home-loving man, very much occupied in carrying on the work of his farm. Always handicapped by heart trouble, he was never-the-less uncomplaining. He held the respect of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
The funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the home at one o'clock and at the Congregational church in Elkader at two o'clock, with the Rev. CT. Brewster officiating. Burial was made in the family lot in the East Side cemetery at Elkader.
