Clara Hellum
Clara Mary Hellum, daughter of Karl and Maren Peterson, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 1990, at the Postville Good Samaritan Home.
Clara was born June 1, 1891, at Blanchardville, WI, where she was baptized in the Lutheran church there. The family moved to Clayton County in Marion Township with a horse and wagon when she was five years old. Clara was confirmed at Marion Lutheran Church. She was educated in the rural schools.
Clara was married to John Hellum, Tyler, MN, December 6, 1913. They began farming near Gunder. Two sons were born to this union.
She and her husband began the Hellum Produce in 1928, and were in the business for 30 years.
She was an active member of Marion Lutheran Church until she became a charter member of the Elgin Lutheran Church.
Clara has lived in her own home until the last few years when she moved to Elgin Senior Citizen housing and then spending six months living with her son, Merlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; a grandson, Curtis Hellum; a great grandson, Kevin Herrling; two brothers: Gilbert and Pete K. Peterson, and her parents.
Surviving are her children, Kenneth, Postville, Merlin, Elgin; five grandchildren, Elaine Leight, Boca Raton, FL, Roger Hellum, New Orleans, LA, U.S. Navy, Jean Ann Van Wey, Louisville, TX, Darlene Johnson and Dorothy Gilson, both of Elgin; 16 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 26, 1990, 1:30 p.m. at Elgin Lutheran Church. Rev. Ernest T. Thompson was pastor. Art Amundson was soloist and Marilana Sutter, organist.
Casket bearers were Rodney Gilson, James Johnson, John Gilson, Steve Halverson, David Anderson, Daryl Anderson.
Burial was in Marion Lutheran Cemetery, Gunder. Muehlethaler Funeral Home, Elgin, was in charge of arrangements.
