Contributor: Connie Ellis (SCHLITTER FAMILY RESEARCHER)Geneva Zelda Schlitter, age 89, of Waukon, Iowa died Thursday, December 10, 1998 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 14 at Martin Funeral Home with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the Council Hill Cemetery, rural Monona, Iowa. Casket bearers were Bennie Fiet, Leo Klocke, Walter Kurth, Jr., Dale Dahlstrom, Eldean Wilkins, and Delbert Cahoon. Honorary bearers were Lois Brandsmeier, Leone Gruber, Wesley and Evelyn Winters, Donald and Polly Schlitter.
Geneva was born October 18, 1909 to Raymond and Zelda (Denning) Cahoon on their farm in rural McGregor, Iowa. Geneva received her education in rural Clayton County schools. On February 28, 1928 she married Fred Schlitter in Elkader, Iowa. They farmed in rural McGregor and in several places in Allamakee County before moving to Waukon, Iowa in 1974. Geneva was a member of the Neighborhood Club and for over 30 years, a member of the same card club.
Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred, a brother Kenneth Cahoon and a sister, Nina Wilkins.
She is survived by her 3 daughters, Darlene "Boots" (Stan) Ewing and Marcella (Gordon) Hansmeier, all of Waukon, Iowa and Anna Mae (LaVerne) Geno of Postville, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild; and a sister, Lelia Knight of Decorah, Iowa.
