Edna Caroline (Glawe) Newbern, 93, Guttenberg, formerly of Elkader, died Saturday morning, November 8, 2003 at the Guttenberg Iowa Care Center.
She was born October 26, 1910, in Boardman Township, Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of William Sr. and Caroline (Ihlenfeldt) Glawe. She was baptized December 4, 1910, at Peace United Church of Christ by Rev. Franke, and was confirmed there April 5, 1925. She received her education in the rural schools of Boardman Township and graduated from Elkader High School in 1928. While growing up she helped on the family farm and later worked for her dad at his Elkader Bottling Co. She spent many hours working with her mother who operated the Elkader Hospital.
On June 4, 1930, she was united in marriage to Kenneth M. Newbern. Together they created a loving home in Elkader, Iowa for their three sons, Dean, Donald and Richard.
Edna was a homemaker and enjoyed her garden and she was a wonderful cook. She loved to crochet and embroider. She created many beautiful articles and afghans for her children and grandchildren. Her family and her grandchildren were the joy of her life. She was a lifetime active member of Peace United Church of Christ and enjoyed the Ladies Guild and was a faithful member of the church choir for many years.
She is survived by two sons, Donald (Arma Jean) and Richard (Mary) both of Guttenberg; a daughter-in-law Doretta Newbern, Elkader; four grandchildren, Kenlyn (Terry) Boelter, Sanborn, Dawn (Michael) Bilsten, Houston, Texas, Bruce (Karen) Newbern, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Jill (Tom) Mohr, Britt; eleven great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Alison Boelter, James and Amanda Newbern, Andrea (Shane) Pratt, Jacob, Halie, and Kate Mohr, Anna, Emily and Megan Newbern; one sister-in-law, Muriel Newbern Whitten and many more relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth in 1975; one son, Dean in 2003; a grandchild, Kevin (Patty) Newbern, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Irvin (Ann) Glawe, Eldo, Bill (Laura) Glawe and sister-in-law, Ruth Newbern Woods.
