Mrs. Wm. Neuhring Well Known Here Is Buried At Guttenberg

A group of relatives from this community have returned from Guttenberg, la., where they had been to attend the funeral of Mrs. Wm. Nuehring, who died on October 6, the victim of heart attack brought on by the sudden knowledge that the large barn on the farm was going up in. flames. Among the relatives from here who attended the funeral on Tuesday of last week were: Mr. and Mrs. John Vlotho and John Vlotho, Jr., Henry Vlotho, and Mrs. R. H. Eilts, also Mr. and Mrs. Gerd Onken of Madison, S. D., Gustav Vlotho and Miss Verona Vlotho of Le Mars. The deceased was quite well known in this community. Concerning the fire, and the life of Mrs. Nuehring, the Guttenberg Press says;

It was just before 6 o'clock Friday evening, Oct. 6, when the barn was discovered to be on fire. In the excitement, that followed it was realized that a change in the wind would endanger the home and other buildings on the farm and the shock was more than Mrs. Nuehring could bear. Unable to witness the destruction of the barn, she stepped into the car of Mrs. Otto Borcherding and asked to be driven to the home of her neighbor, Mrs. Fred Schaal. She was stricken on the way to her neighbor's home and her body was carried into the Schaal home by Mrs. Schaal and two truck drivers who happened along at that time.

Mrs. Nuehring was 60 years old and was born in Jefferson township. the daughter of Gustav and Fredericka Dittmer, on July 7, 1873. She spent her entire life in this community and on February 18, 1896, she was united in marriage to William Nuehring. Her untimely death is mourned by her husband. William Nuehring and her four children, Verni and Mathilda at home, Mrs. John Becker of near Clayton, and Mrs. Ted Dittmer of Colesburg. She also leaves her aged father-in-law, John Nuehring, . One brother. Fred Dittmer of Ireton and two sisters. Mrs. John Vlotho of Ireton, and Mrs. Gerd Onken of Madison, S. Dak. There are also several grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends who were shocked at her sudden and unexpected death.

Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheran church, of which she was a lifelong member. Rev. W J Adix conducted the services and interment was made in the. city cemetery.

The barn, the cause of the tragedy, was burned to the ground, causing a heavy loss. The origin of the fire is unknown. The Guttenberg fire department was called to the rescue and succeeded in preventing the flame from spreading to other buildings on the farmstead.

The barn as located on the John Nuehring farm west of town which had been operated by the William Nuehring family for the past 15 years.
