Charles Henry Marfilius, son of Anton and Wilhelmina Marfilius was born 22nd of March, 1857, in Ashland County, Penn. Here he spent his boyhood days and at the age of ten he came with his family to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. After spending one year at that place the family located on a farm twelve miles in the country in the vicinity of Grand Grey.

Here he grew to young manhood under pioneer hardships, helping clear the land which became the home of the family. At the age of 21, just 50 years ago, he came to Froelich, Clayton Co., Iowa, laboring on the same farm where his daughter and family now reside.

On Nov. 23, 1882, he was united in marriage to Mary Meier and located on a farm in Giard township. Later they moved to a farm in Farmersburg township and 15 years ago they retired from active farm labor and moved to Froelich, Iowa. Forty-five years of happy married life were spent together and to this union one son and one daughter were born.

He was a member of the Prairie Evangelical church for 48 years, joining during the pastorate of Rev. F. Eilert. He gave himself and his best in loyal service to his church. He served as Sunday school superintendent for 25 years and at various times for a number of years held other offices in the church, such as steward, class leader and trustee. All this time he was very faithful in his attendance at public worship.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. All that loving hands could do was done but to no avail. God saw fit to relieve him from all suffering on May 9th at the age of 71 years, one month and 17 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. There remain to mourn his death, his bereaved widow, one son, William of Farmersburg township, one daughter, Mrs. David Kammerer of Froelich, seven grandchildren, who were his joy and delight, one brother August of Madison, Wis., one sister, Mrs. Tillie Sheppard of Luana, as well as many other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon, May 11 from the home to the Prairie church and interment was made in the Giard cemetery, Rev. R. W. Berg officiating.
