Prominent Publisher Buried at McGregor

Anton Huebsch, veteran printer and publisher of the North Iowa Times of McGregor, ended life’s “Take” with slug “30” Saturday evening, May 12th. His health began to fail about a year ago and some two months ago pneumonia developed, following an attack of the “flu.” He recovered sufficiently to be about a little but a weakened system failed in important functions so that death followed.

“Tony” Huebsch was born in West McGregor April 5th, 1871, and while still a young lad served his apprenticeship to printer’s trade under J. F. Widman, publisher of the McGregor News. When but eighteen years old he went to Denver, Colo., where he worked a year and then returned to work for Mr. Widman. Several years later he and John Helberg purchased the North Iowa Times. In 1898 Tony purchased Mr. Helberg’s interest.

He was married to Miss Kate Geske in 1900. Five years later he sold the Times and with his wife and two children joined a party of friends who were taking up homesteads in South Dakota.

Two years of struggle as a farmer ended with him again in a print shop, this time in Minneapolis. Another year and in 1908 he again took over the helm of the Times. Since then he has continuously served the community. In 1909 he merged his paper with the McGregor News, his printing university. From 1912 to 1918, during the Woodrow Wilson Administration, he was postmaster of McGregor.

He is survived by his widow, Kate Huebsch; two daughters, Dorothy and Mari Ann; and two sons, Fred and Tom.

Fred, a graduate of the University of Iowa and at present telegraph editor of the Evanston News-Index, will take charge of the Times and continue his father’s work.

Tony Huebsch will be sadly missed in many circles and there was warm regard for him shown at the funeral services held Monday afternoon at the Community Rooms in McGregor, where his coffin was literally buried in flowers and large numbers attended to pay their last tribute.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and friends.

"Tony" Huebsch

WELL KNOWN NEWSPAPER PUBLISHER DIES SATURDAY

With the press throughout this section of the state, the Herald regrets to record the passing of "Tony" Huebsch, the genial, jovial and capable editor and publisher of the North Iowa Times. The following brief synopsis of his life is sent out from the Times office to the press and covers the main points in his life:

"Tony" Huebsch was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Huebsch, born in West McGregor, April 5, 1871. Times were rugged and after four years in St. Mary's parochial school and one year in the public school he had to quit his studies to contribute to the support of his family.

At 18 he had so mastered the printer's trade that he set out for Denver, where he worked a year. He came back to work at the case of the old McGregor News, then published by J. F. Widman.

Several years later he had his own newspaper office, first as partner to John Helberg and then sole owner of the North Iowa Times in 1898.

"Tony" married Kate Geske in 1900. Five years later, with two children, they sold the plant and went to North Dakota with a party of friends to take up homesteads.

"Tony's" health began to fail a year ago. Complications following pneumonia brought his death Saturday morning last. He is survived by his widow, Kate Huebsch; two daughters, Dorothy and Mari Ann; and two sons, Fred and Tom.

Fred, a graduate of the University of Iowa, and at present telegraph editor of the Evanston News-Ind____ (newspaper clipping corner is gone) will take charge of the paper."

Postville, Iowa newspaper of the time clipping, hand written date of May 13, 1928, from Dorothy Schave's obituary collection.
