CLEARBROOK, Minnesota -- Elma Martha Hinman (nee Burnham) was born near Luana on February 21, 1870, and passed away at Erskine, Minnesota on Wednesday morning, March 26, 1952, at the age of 82 years, one month and five days.
On March 27, 1891, she was united in marriage to William E. Hinman. The young couple farmed in Allamakee and Clayton counties until 1920 when they moved to Clearbrook, where they spent most of their time on a farm until Mr. Hinman passed away May 7, 1934. Eight children were born to this union.
A daughter, Ruby, passed away at the age of three years, and a baby boy in early infancy. Her only brother, Hilas Burnham, of Waukon, also preceded her in death.
The surviving members of her family are: Max of Erskine, Lynn of Dubuque, Gladys Stoker and Earl of Clearbrook, Winnefred Taflin of Gonvick, and Kenneth of Davenport. Also 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Many people will remember her for her courage when lost in the dense woods at Ray, Minnesota for seven days and nights, at the age of 64. Through faith and prayer she survived the unforgetable experience.
Funeral services were held at the First Lutheran church in Clearbrook Sunday afternoon, March 30, with Rev. A. H. Stohre officiating, and interment was in the Baptist church cemetery.
