Funeral services for Irene Schmidt were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, 1986 at the Presbyterian Church in Wadena, Iowa. Interment was in the Wadena Cemetery. The Rev. William Straka, chaplain of the Lutheran Home at Strawberry Point, Iowa officiated. Roy Murphy and Steven Torson were casketbearers.

Irene Bertha, daughter of Calvin and Minerva Voshell, was born February 25, 1905 in the rural area of Wadena, Iowa. She was baptized in the Methodist Faith. She received her education in the Wadena Schools. In 1927 she married Clifford Miersen. They couple lived in the Strawberry Point area.

On January 2, 1945, Irene married Henry Schmidt at the Methodist Church parsonage in Strawberry Point, Iowa. The couple lived in the Volga and Strawberry Point areas until the mid 1950s when they purchased a farm east of Fayette, Iowa. Henry died April 10, 1986. Following his death Irene remained on the farm. She died at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa of cancer, on Thursday, June 26, 1986 at the age of 81 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands; one son, Dennis Schmidt; one great-granddaughter, Catherine Lynn Erb; 3 brothers, Luther, Lyle, and Howard Voshell and 5 sisters, May Voshell, Nettie Voshell, Mattie Phillips, Edna Blockhaus, and Jessie Anderman.

Note: Irene was survived by one daughter, Shirley (Mrs. Arthur Axmear) of Cedar Rapids; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Orville "Jim" Voshell of Wadena, Iowa.
