Funeral services were held Friday, September 16 for Esther Emma Staack, age 91, who died Tuesday, September 13, 1988 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. The 11 a.m. services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center, Iowa with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Leonard-Witt Funeral Home of Elkader, Iowa in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Ronald Gottschalk, Lester Thomson, Harold Dahl, John Walsh, Robert Gronna, and Everett Ellefson. Honorary pallbearers were Francis Behning, Don Knudson, Eldo Wilke, Jay Johnson, and Gilbert Barnhart, Sr.

Esther was born August 30, 1897 near Elkader, Iowa to Charles and Louise (Moeller) Schmidt. She attended rural Clayton County schools. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. On January 5, 1916 she married William Staack. They farmed in Clayton County until 1959 when they moved to Elkader, Iowa. He died June 20, 1978. She remained active in the church and Zion Lutheran Church women as long as she could. She remained in Elkader until 1983 when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Darrel Easley; a brother Fred Schmidt, and two sisters, Hilma Ihde and Eleanor Schmidt.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Bertin (Winnifred) Juvik of Waukon, Iowa and Mrs. Harley (Lucille) Seeland of Elkader, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild and 1 great-great grandchild.
