Edwin William Bugenhagen, Sr. of Monona, Iowa died August 6, 1986 at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Services were held August 8 at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa with Pastor Ted Ager officiating. Pallbearers were Dale Bugenhagen, Brian Bugenhagen, Daniel Solomon, David Merwin, Orville Rodenberg, and Kenneth Wagner. Burial was in the church cemetery. Schultz Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Edwin was born in Luana, Iowa June 1, 1896 to William and Wilhelmina (Meyer) Bugenhagen. He was baptized June 21, 1896 and confirmed April 9, 1911 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana. He attended Luana grade school. On December 19, 1923 he married Lydia Backes in Guttenberg, Iowa. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Mr. Bugenhagen farmed near Luana, retiring in 1962 to his present home in Monona, Iowa. His wife Lydia died December 4, 1965. On February 8, 1968 Edwin married Martha Backes at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They lived at his home in Monona, Iowa. Edwin was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was a member of the Leslie H. Leas American Legion post unit 159.

Preceding him in death were his first wife Lydia, their son Harlan Bugenhagen, and another son Edwin Bugenhagen, Jr. who recently died in June of 1986; his brother William Bugenhagen, and a sister, Esther Blumhagen.

Surviving are his wife Martha; son Ervin Bugenhagen of Luana, Iowa; daughters, Mrs. Elaine Merwin and Mrs. Arlene Solomon of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Bugenhagen of Luana, Iowa, and 2 sisters, Irene Harnack of McGregor, Iowa and Mabel Nielsen of Luana, Iowa.
