Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Selma Hofer were held February 2 at Highland Lutheran Church, Elkader, Iowa. Rev. Ernest T. Thompson officiated at the 2 p.m. service. Leonard-Witt Funeral Home, Elkader was in charge of arrangements. She died January 29, 1987 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader. Interment was in Highland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Elkader, Iowa.
Selma Esther, daughter of Gottlieb and Adeline (Butikofer) Friederich was born December 11, 1905 near Elgin, Iowa. She attended Clayton County schools. On January 14, 1926 she married Ernest Lerch. They farmed in Marion Township, Clayton County, Iowa until his death in 1940. She married Harold Meisner on September 13, 1941 in Wisconsin. They lived and farmed in Marion Township until Harold's death in 1968. She married Clarence Hofer at Highland Lutheran Church August 2, 1969. They resided in her present rural Elkader home. He also preceded her in death in 1976. Selma was employed at Central Community Hospital for 20 years. She was a long time member of Highland Lutheran Church.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Randy Meisner in 1973 and 2 brothers Arthur and Lawrence Friederich.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Mervin (Elva Mae) Larson of Postville, Iowa and Mrs. Eldon (Dorothy Ann) Shaw of Edgewood, Iowa; 5 sons, Lawrence Lerch of Elkader, Iowa, George Lerch of El Reno, Oklahoma, Lyle Meisner of Volga, Iowa, Ivan Meisner of Farmersburg, Iowa, and Glen Meisner of Elkader, Iowa; a step-daughter, Anna Johnson of West Union, Iowa; 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother William Friederich of Elgin, Iowa, a sister, Mrs. Ernie (Esther) Bruellman of Frost, Minnesota. In addition, she is survived by numerous members of the Hofer family.
