Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 8 for Howard Bernhard of Monona, Iowa who died Saturday, December 5, 1987 at Prairie Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The 11 a.m. services were held at Garden City United Methodist Church in Monona, Iowa with Rev. Marion Bloodworth officiating. Burial was in the city cemetery with Schultz Funeral Home of Monona in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Bill Wiethorn, Stan Bernhard, Scott Rumph, Bill Dickey, Bob Meyer, and Gene Klinge.

Howard was born February 21, 1910 in Giard, Iowa to Clarence and Emma (Hardke) Bernhard. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith and received his education in Cooper Valley country school. On July 28, 1934 he married Alice Olson in Galena, Illinois. They farmed in Fairview township in Allamakee County until retiring at age 65. He remained on the farm until his illness.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Clifford and Gordon Bernhard and a sister, Ruth Meyer.

Surviving are his wife, Alice; 4 sons: Roger, Dean, Russell, and Donald Bernhard, all of Monona, Iowa; a brother Clarence Bernhard Jr. of Garnavillo, Iowa; 5 sisters, Ethel Klinge and Helen Wold of Monona, Iowa, Viola Alderson of Wadena, Iowa, Georgine Schmidt and Beverly Mazuk of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
