NEW HAMPTON, Aug. 14, 1934
J. W. Cords, 85; died at his home on North Locust avenue Monday after-
noon after an illness of 11 days. Mr. Cords was born in Germany 85
years ago. When 9 years old - he came to the United States to Clayton
county. Sixty years ago he came to New Hampton.
For more than 40 years Mr. Cords tuned pianos in northeastern
Iowa. For 15 years he operated music store in New Hampton. More
than 30 years ago he was the first
person to drive an automobile in New Hampton. He always owned
and operated a car since that time. His widow and two sons: Albert
Cords, Chicago, and Arthur Cords,
Dubuque, survive.Mason City Globe
Note: J. W. Cords was son of Mary Stopperan Cords
who married Fred Grossman in Pennsylvania before moving to Iowa prior to 1860. Lived Clayton and Fayette counties. He had two sisters, Minnie Kruse of South Dakota and Mary McWilliams (d. 1949). Given name of father of Cords children unknown.
