Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Doris L. Howard died Sunday July 5, 1987 at the age of 65. Funeral services were held July 9 at 11 a.m. at the Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa. Rev. Ernest Thompson officiated. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery. Muehlethaler Funeral Home, Elgin was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Maurice Landsgard, Roger Howard, Donald Dominy, Donald Bodensteiner, Kenneth Strong, and Orlando Lindley. Honorary pallbearers were Emery Landsgard, Donald Houg, Orlan Landsgard, Burdette Wold, and Gordon Landsgard.
Doris L. Howard, daughter of Harold and Helen (Nelson) Landsgard was born in Marion Township, Clayton County, Iowa August 28, 1921. She was baptized at the Marion Lutheran Church and confirmed at West Clermont Lutheran Church. She attended the Clermont, Iowa schools and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
On January 29, 1942 she married Robert T. Howard in the West Clermont Lutheran Church. They lived for a short time at West Union, Iowa then moved to DeKalb, Illinois where they entered in a partnership in the DeKalb Toy and Novelty Company. At this time Doris was employed as personnel director at the Diamond Wire Company. They lived in the DeKalb area for 22 years. They sold their interest in the Toy and Novelty Company and moved to Monroe, Michigan where they owned and operated the Culligan Water Conditioning Company for 20 years. They sold the business and retired in 1984.
Doris was proud of her Norwegian heritage and her hobbies were reading and traveling. She especially enjoyed her trips back to Iowa. She was active in the Lutheran Church where she taught and served on various committees.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Robert, who died October 17, 1984.
Survivors include an aunt Hulda Lindley, Osage, Iowa, sister-in-law, Alice Howard, Elgin, Iowa; 3 nieces, a nephew and many cousins and friends.
