Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Donald John Coxey was born September 24, 1916 in Hurley, Wisconsin to John and Jennie (Corenski) Coxey. He graduated from high school in 1936. On September 10, 1941 he married Leona Lake at the Presbyterian Church parsonage in Hurley. He worked for seven years for S.S. Kresge Company and Schultz Bros. in various locations. In 1947 they moved to Monona, Iowa where they owned and operated Coxey's Gambles Store in Monona until retiring in 1976. He was a charter member of the Monona Kiwanis Club, St.Paul's Lutheran Church, and church council in addition to being active in Boy Scouts of America. They enjoyed traveling, visiting 49 of the 50 states and fishing.
Donald died Tuesday October 18, 1988 at Memorial Hospital Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Funeral services were held Friday, October 21 at 11 a.m. at St.Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa with the Rev. Raymond Ehlers officiating. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery with Schultz Funeral Home, Monona, Iowa in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Burnell Kleifoth, Raymond DeSotel, Marion Olson, Bill Possehl, Ivan Melcher, and Carl Johanningmeier. Honorary pallbearers were Dr.Donald Fields and Telmer Olson.
Surviving him are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Ken (Mary) Kofoed of Marshalltown, Iowa and Mrs. Ron (Jean) Kurth of Tampa, Florida; 5 grandchildren and a brother Ted Joswiak of Reed City, Michigan.
