Mrs. Henkes Funeral Held
Funeral services for Mrs. Albert Henkes, 71, of Monona, were held Thursday afternoon, May 12, at 2 o'clock at the Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church with Rev. John Peterson officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery at Monona.
Although Mrs. Henkes was a patient of hospitals several times the last years, she was admitted to the McGregor hospital the last time April 27 until she died Monday evening, May 9 at 8:15 o'clock.
As Laura Johanna Maria she was born a daughter of Frederick and Dorothea, nee Baade, Klasen on August 7, 1894, on a farm 2 1/2 miles north of Farmersburg.
She was baptized October 1, 1894 by Rev. F. W. Seifert and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith April 12, 1908, at St. John's Lutheran church at Farmersburg by Rev. F. Godow.
She attended the rural Bismark school.
On October 18, 1912 she was united in marriage to Albert Henkes by Rev. Theodore Guetzloff at the home of her parents. They started farming south of Monona where they resided until March 1, 1958, when they retired and moved to their present home in Monona.
After her marriage she became a member of the Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church of Monona and was a member of the WSWS.
Though she had numerous ailments for many years she met her death and God bravely.
She had been the victim of crippling arthritis for the past 47 years. Even though she suffered pain she would always greet you with a smile of hope for improvement.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Leaving to mourn her are her husband, four sons: Kenneth at home, Harlan of Cedar Rapids, and Roger and Curtis of Monona; seven grandchildren, Colleen, Crystal, Cherrie, Corrine, Pamela and Scott Henkes of Monona; and Larry Henkes of Cedar Rapids; two sisters: Mrs. Frank (Ella) Engelhardt of St. Olaf and Mrs. Oscar (Amanda) Henkes of Monona; one brother, Harvey Klasen of Farmersburg.
Pallbearers were Alonzo Engelhardt, Wendel Engelhardt, Donald Henkes, Donald Schlitter, Elmer Schlitter, Donald Elvers, J. J. Mathews and Mrs. Gerald Klotzbach.
