Mrs. Farley (Merlie Mae Hazlett) Henkes

Funeral services for Mrs. Farley Henkes of Monona, were held Friday, July 29, 1977 at the Garden City United Methodist Brick Church. Rev. Raymond Pacholke officiated.

Pallbearers were Mike Reardon, Harold Moon, Harvey Marting, Orville Troester, Ed Bush and Marlyn Henderson. Honorary pallbearers were Ivon Schultz, Lloyd Bacon, Burette Wold, Eldo Johanningmeier, Lester Doerring, Howard Hubacher and Vern Marting.

Burial was in the Giard Cemetery.

Merlie Mae Henkes, daughter of George and Mae Cunningham Hazlett, was born June 12, 1906, on the family farm near Monona, Iowa. She passed away very suddenly at her home in Monona, Iowa, on July 27, 1977, at the age of 71 years, one month and 15 days. Merlie was baptized in the Monona Methodist Church in 1909 and received into membership in 1916 by Rev. James B. Bird. She later became a member of the Garden City United Methodist Church when the Methodist churches of Monona became one with the merger.

Merlie received her early education in the Giard Township District #3 school near Monona. She graduated from Monona High School in 1923. She obtained a two year normal teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University in 1925 after which she taught in rural elementary schools near Monona and near Boise, Idaho. In 1930 she received her B.A. in education from Upper Iowa University, then taught in New Hartford, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Farley Henkes in 1932 and to this union three children were born: Patricia, Rollie and Polly. They lived on the Henkes family farm near Farmersburg until 1962 when they moved to their present home in Monona.

Merlie was an active 4-H leader for over 10 years. As a member of the Garden City United Methodist Church of Monona she served in the women's work of the church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Irwin and her sister, Wilma Gilbert Schlitter.

She leaves to remember her, her husband, Farley, her children: Mrs. Tom (Patricia) Towers of Providence, Rhode Island; Rollie Henkes of Genesco, Ill.; Mrs. Eldon (Polly) Morrison of White Bear Lake, Minn.; three sisters, Frances Fuelling of Elmhurst, Ill.; Mrs. Dan (Jane) Coffman of Lone Tree, Iowa, Mrs. Merle (Dorothea) Wirkler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and one brother, William Hazlett of Monona, Iowa. She also leaves nine grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law, along with many other relatives and friends.
