Helen Drebenstedt, 78, of Waverly died Tuesday evening, May 14 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

She was born on November 13, 1912, on a farm in Clayton County, Iowa, near Luana, the daughter of Elzer and Amanda (Wirkler) Schierholz. She was baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville. As a very young girl she moved with her family to Luana where she attended school and was graduated from the Luana High School in 1930.

On May 27, 1936 she married Gustav Drebenstedt in the Lutheran Church parsonage at Rock Island, IL. The couple made their home in Castalia, IA where Gus worked for the Carnation Company. In 1967, Gus was transferred to Waverly where they have lived since.

She had been in ill health for some time, entered Allen Memorial Hospital May 6, 1991, where she had surgery, and died following a heart attack after surgery.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly and had been very active in her church both in Waverly and when they lived in Castalia.

She is survived by her husband, Gus of Waverly; 2 brothers, Milton Schierholz of Postville and Irving Schierholz of Monona and by many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one sister, Malinda Reinhardt and one niece, Marna Jane Reinhardt.

Funeral services were held Friday, may 17, 1991 at 9 a.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and at 2 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville with Pastor Mark N. Gravdal officiating. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
