Clarence Harold Davis
Funeral services for Clarence Harold Davis, born January 9, 1909, were held on Monday, August 12 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, McGregor, with Fr. Donald Hutchinson officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. He suffered a stroke the evening before and died at the Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien at the age of 76. Clarence was one of 12 children of George and Ella (Peterson) Davis. At the age of 11 he lost his parents and two brothers of influenza in February of 1920. The family was then held together by an older brother Oscar and sister Clara. He was a resident of Clayton County all his life, where he farmed in the Farmersburg area a few years and then in the McGregor area. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He received his education in a rural school of the Sny Magill area.
On February 12, 1935 he was united in marriage to Lucille Laufer. To this union four children were born, Alice (Mrs. Don Montgomery, Jr.) of Monona, Donna (Mrs. Burton Walters, Jr.) of McGregor, Kenneth of rural McGregor with whom he made his home for several years and Sharon who died in infancy.
He enjoyed his five grandchildren very much. Burton Walters III of Monticello, Terri (Mrs. Bob Wall) of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Scot, Angela and Robert Davis. He enjoyed visiting with people and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille who died on January 15, 1967; his parents; seven brothers and two sisters and a baby daughter.
He is survived by his children, five grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Emily Berke of Wheaton, Ill., and Mrs. Marguerite Laufer of Monona, nine nephews and six nieces and many friends.
Pallbearers were Duaine, Don, Harold, Russell and Gerald Davis and Wayne Thomas. Honorary pallbearers were Clair Miller, Arnold Larson, Ed Riley, Floyd Friedlein, Ray Grady and Louis Mood. Arrangements were made by Thornburg Funeral Home of McGregor.
