Delbert John Martins, the son of Leska Charles and Alta (Brandtman) Martins, was born April 13, 1922 in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. He had reached the age of 78 years, seven months and seventeen days.

He was baptized July 2, 1922 and confirmed June 20, 1937, both in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, Iowa. He attended the Pixler School near his home. Delbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan.

On December 4, 1949 he was married to Donna Rose in the Methodist Church at Independence, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Alan, Linda, and Janice. They lived on a farm in Grand Meadow Township for 17 years, moved to the Martins family farm in 1967 and then to the Gunder area. Delbert became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in July of 1993, following a stroke. He and his wife would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on December 4.

Delbert loved to farm and he loved the hard work that went with it. He and son Alan farmed together for many years, doing the milking and other chores. He also loved his animals, the special herd of calves that he hand fed, the trips to the sale barn with his family, and his dog who was usually found waiting for him at the door.

He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Delmar and a brother, Delos Martins, and a sister, Delores Larson.

Surviving are his wife, Donna, a son, Alan (Betty) Martins, of Luana, two daughters, Linda Martins of Oviedo, FL, and Janice Caylor Martins of Coralville, IA; 10 grandchildren, Mindy (Duane) Rose, Jason (Jill) Martins, Amy Martins, Erin Martins, Christie Caylor, Shapri Martins, Christopher Martins, Jediah Martins, Paris Martins, and Toni Martins; two great grandchildren, Keegan Eberling and Alissa Rose; two brothers, Donald (Mary) Martins of Fairbank, IA and Duane (Marlys) Martins of Waukon, IA, two sisters, Darlene (Eldred) Neuhring, of Postville and Della Cowell of Luana, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

Delbert was a member of the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder and became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville in 1997. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion in Postville. Casket bearers were Lonnie, Douglas, and Dan Martins and Dave Larson, Larry Sloan and Gene Hanson.
