Funeral services for Mrs. Bernold Monroe were held Thursday, August 7, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Schutte Funeral Home at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. Special music was provided by organist Joann Martins and soloist John Carlson. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia, Iowa. Casket bearers were Denis, LeVirgil, Scott, Paul and Leland Monroe and Wayne Heins.

Marjorie May Louise Monroe was born August 9, 1925, to Lester Harnack and Edna (nee Wilke) Harnack, on a farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville, Iowa. She died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 77 years, 11 months, and 21 days.

She was baptized on October 18, 1925 by Pastor E. T. Finck and confirmed on November 13, 1938 by Rev. F. R. Ludwig in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, where she was a lifetime member. Marjorie graduated from Postville High School in 1944. Following graduation, Marjorie worked as a secretary for the Wilson Meat Packing Plant in Cedar Rapids.

Meanwhile, Marjorie had met a young man, Bernold Monroe, while bowling at the Postville Bowling Alley. He went into the Navy during World War II, and she waited for him to return, and on April 26, 1945, Marjorie was married to Bernold Gene Monroe in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. To this union three children were born, Donna, David, and Dana. In 1959 the couple moved to a farm south of Luana, and in 1984 they moved to Postville.

Marjorie enjoyed her garden. She helped with the chores in the milk house and took care of her chickens. She liked to bake bread as well.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving is her husband, Bernold, her children, Donna (John) Carlson of Rockford, IL, David (Linda) Monroe of Luana, and Dana Monroe and special friend, Don Handel, of Arlington, IA; seven grandchildren, Carrie Carlson, Anca Curtui, Anne Monroe, Amy Monroe, Katie Monroe, Morgan Handel, and Summer Handel, and a sister, Charlene (Ed) Casey of Alamo, TX.

Marjorie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA, the VW Auxiliary and the Home Garden Club.
