Veryle Miller

Veryle Irene Miller was born September 10, 1903 at Giard, Iowa, daughter of Charles and Beulah (Loe) Nichols. She attended the Giard and Luana Schools, graduating in 1922. She also attended two summer session at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. She taught rural school in the Luana area and two years at Castalia.

Veryle married Harva Miller June 17, 1925 at Caledonia, MN. They kept their marriage a secret for one year as married women could not teach. Two children were born to this union, Jean and Marvin. Harva started farming on the Miller homestead in March 1926. They farmed until 1962 when they moved to Monona.

Veryle was active in the Garden City United Methodist Church, Women's Club, Garden Club, several Bridge Clubs, Homemakers and Farm Bureau.

Veryle died Friday, December 13, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harva, who died January 31, 1995; three grandsons, Billy and Charles Smith, and David Miller; one great granddaughter Caryn Enyart; and four brothers, Kenneth, Leslie, Glen and Curtis Nichols.

Survivors include one daughter, Jean (Ed) Smith, of Monona, IA; one son, Marvin (Darlene) of McGregor, IA; grandsons: Fred (Debbie) Smith, Jeff (Janelle) Smith, Steve (Luanne) Miller, Paul (Jeanne) Miller, Dan (Donna) Miller, Tom (Vicki) Miller, and Tim (Sara) Miller; granddaughters: Barbara (Roger) Repta, Christine (Tim) Enyart, Susan (Steve) Turner, and Wendy (Leo) Gansen; 38 great grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth (Paul) Drape, of Evansdale, IA; two sisters-in-law, Helen Nichols of Cedar Falls, IA, and Ruth Miller of Cedar Rapids, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 17, 1996, at 11 a.m. at Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, with Dr. Gary Dobbins officiating. Organist was Mrs. Priscilla Miene with Mr. and Mrs. Kendall Benzing providing a duet. Burial was at Postville Cemetery, Postville, IA. Pallbearers were Paul, Tom, Dan and Tim Miller. Schultz's Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of arrangements.
