Elmer William Bartels, 65, son of August Bartels and his wife, Karolina, nee Druecker, was born on the parental farm two miles north of St. Sebald on Oct. 12, 1900.
He was baptized by the pastor, G.H. Fuehr, on Nov. 4, 1900, at St. Sebald Lutheran church. At the same church and before the same pastor he reaffirmed his baptismal vow on April 5, 1914, after due instruction. He received his public school education in rural schools of Clayton county.
On April 5, 1934, he married Hazel Larson. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. E.R. Melchert at St. Seband [sic], where both were members. They took up farming on the parental homestead and lived there until 1952, when they came to Oelwein. They took an active part in the affairs of Zion American Lutheran church and served as custodians for 10 years.
He died Thursday, June 9, at Grandview Nursing Home in Oelwein.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; three sons, Leonard, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Korea; David of Cedar Falls and Merlin at home; one sister, Mrs. J.O. Fredrick, Strawberry Point and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services are pending at the Brant Funeral Home in Oelwein for Elmer W. Bartels, 65, 1115 South Frederick, who died Thursday, June 9, at Grandview Nursing Home.
He was a retired Registerland farmer. Services will be held at the Zion Lutheran church. The Rev. LaVerne Streich will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home after Friday, 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Sebald cemetery, Strawberry Point.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel; three sons, Lt. Leonard Bartels, with the U.S. Army, Korea; David, Cedar Rapids; Merlin, at home; one sister, Mrs. J.O. Fredrick, Strawberry Point.
