Sgt. Alfred R. LEONARD

Manchester, Ia. – Sgt. Alfred R. Leonard, 29, husband of the former Miss Margaret Keller of this city, who since May 31 (1944) was reported missing in action, was officially reported as killed according to a message received from the War Department this week by his wife here. Since May 19, Sergeant Leonard had been stationed in Italy with the 15th Air Force.

A gunner on a B-24 Liberator, he had been reported missing in action May 31 over Romania, 12 days after he had reached Italy.

Son of Mr. John & Mrs. (Mary Stoffard) Leonard of Strawberry Point, (Ia.) Sergeant Leonard was born on a farm near Littleport, Ia., May 14, 1919, was graduated from Strawberry Point High School, and worked on his father’s farm until he entered the service, from Clayton County (Ia.) Mar. 15, 1943.

He married Margaret Keller of Manchester June 10 1941.

His first training was received at the training branch at Miami, Fla., and later in a machinist’s school at Seymour-Johnson Field in North Carolina. Later he studied at gunner’s school at Fort Myers, Fla., completed his training at Gowen Field, Ida., and May 10, 1944, left the United States. Nine days later he reached an air base in Italy.

Survivors are his widow, one son, Teddy, 2 ½ years old, his parents of Strawberry Point, and two sisters, Mrs. Gordon Olson, and Mrs. Alfred Burrack, both of Arlington.

While on furlough, Sergeant Leonard joined the Manchester Community Church. The widow and son have been making their home in Manchester since his service overseas.
