A Terribly Casualty
On Friday evening last as Mr. Nicholas Meyer was returning from St. John (Mederville) with a load of flour and fence posts, his horses on arriving near the Haven’s or Cleveland branch started off on the road leading to the bridge, but evidently remembering that the bridge was gone, Mr. Myer (sic) checked the horses and guided them into the narrow road bed leading to the creek, but unfortunately too late.
It being quite dark then, he did not observe the bank, some eight feet high, intervening between him and the road, and down went one side of his wagon and he fell off, the entire load falling on him, killing him instantly. When found his neck was broken, his face being bent down close to his breast. The sad casualty causes general regret as Mr. Meyer was an industrious, honest citizen. His death was so sudden that it started nearly all who learned of it. Coroner Brownson was immediately called and a jury summoned who returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts. Mr. Meyer was buried near Communia Colony, on Tuesday last.
