CLARA SUTTER PASSES AT 93

Funeral services for Clara Medissa Sutter, 93, were held Wednesday afternoon October 1, 1969 at 1:00 p.m. at the Monona United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul V. Clements and Rev. John W. Petersen officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the services. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery.

Miss Sutter died Saturday, September 27, 1969, at the Postville hospital after having a series of strokes. She was born December 26, 1875, near Monona, in the parsonage home adjacent to the Old Stone church at Watson, a daughter of John Bunyon Sutter and Mary Plank. Her maternal grandfather, Rev. John Plank, was the first minister of the church and her paternal grandfather, John Bunyan,Sr. was a pioneer founder of the church.

Rev. Plank was a Methodist minister and a circuit rider in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Her grandfather, John Bunyan Sutter, Sr., hauled freight on the Mississippi River to New Orleans for many years. Her father came to Iowa from Indiana in 1848 and homesteaded in Allamakee County.

She was educated in the rural schools and attended Nora Springs seminary in 1896. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers college,(later known as Northern Iowa University, now University of Northern Iowa) Cedar Falls, Iowa, and later studied at Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa. She taught in the rural schools of Allamakee and Floyd counties, primary teacher at Floyd and also at Aberdeen, South Dakota. She became Iowa's first county home demonstration agent, Black Hawk County, and during World War I headed food preservation for farm women throughout the state. Her extension work continued when she went to South State College at Brookings, South Dakota as extension poultry specialist. To many South Dakotans, she still is remembered as that "lady poultry specialist."

In 1926, Miss Sutter became poultry editor for the 'Farmer's Wife', St. Paul, Minnesota and interviewer and demonstrator for Webb Publishing Company. She traveled in the middle west, Canada, and the Gulf states, attended the World's Poultry congress in Canada in 1927; attended World's Poultry congress at the Crystal Palace in London, England in 1930. For three months she toured the British Isles by bus, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Bavaria,Italy, Switzerland,and France, studying poultry farming. She also visited Oberammergau.

In 1930, she began her "Your Poultry and Mine" column in 'The Farmer', written at her poultry farm near Monona, Iowa. In those years, she kept an annual flock of 1,000 or more White Leghorns, and her columns were filled with helpful information for readers. Her home welcomed many visitors from all over the United States as well as from foreign countries, as she had the distinguished collection of antiques and pottery from every country in Europe.

Preceding her in death were her parents, sisters, Viola Jones, Edna Bennett, and Nettie Schlitter; a brother Frank Sutter, who died at the age of 4 years. She was the last surviving member of her family. Surviving are 13 nieces and nephews. Music at the services was provided by Mrs. Thomas James, soloist, and Mrs. Ivon J. Schultz, organist. Pallbearers were Elmer Holly, Clarence Meyer, Reuben Hoth, Marvin Zittergruen, Roland Jones, William Baskerville, Carlyle V. Reeg, and Alvin Kaiser.
