SZABO, MARY ELIZABETH FERGUSON

Funeral services for Mrs. Robert Szabo were held Thursday, March 21, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Reverend Dave L. Lenth officiated. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Bloomfield Cemetery at Castalia, Iowa.

Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Szabo, the daughter of Lloyd Ferguson and Irma(Drahn) Ferguson, was born August 1, 1927 at Monona, Iowa. She passed away Monday, March 18, 2002 in Veterans's Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. She was baptized August 19, 1927 and confirmed at St.Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa. Mary graduated from the Monona High School in 1944 and attended school in Cedar Rapids for Western Union Telegraph Operators. She moved to Chicago and worked for Western Union for a short time.

She was married to Robert Richard Szabo on November 26, 1945 at Kahoka, Missouri. To this union three children were born, Robert (Jr.), Barbara, and Beverly. They lived in Chicago for a short time and then moved to Castalia. Mary worked briefly at Brown's Tavern, Bucheit's Produce, Iowa Turkey Processors, and Northern Engraving. Mary especially enjoyed her family and her home. She had an eye for color and liked to decorate and paint the rooms in their house. She was an excellent cook and liked to share with family and friends. Mary also enjoyed the outdoors and tending to her flowers, watching birds, and reading.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, the Women of the ELCA, and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Republican Party. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Stanley Ferguson and brothers and sisters-in-law, Theodore Szabo, Robert Meyer, Shirley Szabo, Agnes Smith, Marilyn Wander, and William (Bill) Szabo.

Surviving is her husband, Robert, a son Robert Richard Szabo, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and two daughters, Barbara Jean and her husband Larry Taylor of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and Beverly Rae and her husband, Les Tieskotter of Postville, Iowa. Several grandchildren, Jeremy Kurth, Chad (Kathy) Szabo, Robert R. Szabo,III, Elise Meyer, Evan Meyer, Brett Beeson, and Stacy (Chad) Sue; and one great grandson, Zachariah Szabo.

Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law: Ellen Ferguson of Cedar Rapids, Betty Szabo, Eugene and Jean Szabo, Fayne and Leon Szabo, all of Postville, Victor Szabo, Diane and Bill Buddenberg, Earl Smith, all of Castalia, Edward Szabo of Clermont, Dale and Nadine Szabo of Cedar Rapids, Duane Wander of Riverside, California, and Darlene Schultz of Decorah, and cousins: Fara Wayne Bigelow, Karen Brooks, Bill Kaiser, and Betty Chrysolos.

Casket bearers were: Terry Szabo, Jeff Szabo, Stan Schultz, Daryl Szabo, Kevin Ferguson, and Kevin Smith. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
