Postville Woman Dies In Apparent Suicide

Leanna J. Morarend, 34, of here [Postville] was found dead at her home Monday. The Allamakee County sheriff's office said death was apparently the result of suicide.

She was found in the basement-garage of her home at 407 Lybrand St. here, dead as the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

She had worked at Norplex-Oak Inc. here since 1975, currently working in the shipping department. She had worked Friday and was scheduled to begin work at 8 a.m. Monday. When she did not show up for work, she was called, which Sherrill Heckman described as routine procedure.

When there was no answer, she and David Lensing, Morarend's foreman, went to her home and found her body sitting in the front seat of her car.

Postville Police were called at 11:30 a.m. and the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office was called at 12:05. Schutte Ambulance Service was called to the scene. Monday night they transferred the body to Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, which is in charge of funeral arrangements.

The woman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Morarend, live near Guttenberg. Funeral services are planned at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo. There is to be no public visitation.

She had 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
