Ken McKee Loses Life in Truck-Train Accident

Kenneth McKee of Luana was fatally injured Friday afternoon when the truck he was driving crashed into an Illinois Central Gulf Railroad freight train near here, derailing eight cars.

Floyd County Sheriff, L.L. Lane said the engine and seven freight cars went off the tracks, but the train crew escaped injury.

McKee, 21, was taken to a Charles City hospital, then transferred to a Rochester, Minn., hospital, where he died.

The accident happened three miles southeast of Charles City at a crossing with a county road. Lane said vision at the crossing is not obstructed. He said the engineer reported the train was traveling about 25 miles per hour when the truck crashed into the rear of the engine. Lane said there was no evidence McKee "even touched his brakes" before the accident, and that the engineer tried unsuccessfully to stop the train before the collision.
