Visitation was held from 2 to 6 p.m. May 9, 2010 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before service time at the church, with funeral services being held at 10:30 a.m. May 10 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Burial took place at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center, Iowa.

Mildred M. Hoffman, 85, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.

Mildred May Sommer Hoffman was born May 7, 1924, the daughter of Albert and Alice (Steeman) Sommer in Boardman Township. She was baptized on August 10, 1924, at Friedens Evangelical Church by Rev. C.H. Franke. She was confirmed at the Evangelical and Reformed Church by Rev. Paul Kitterer in 1937. Mildred graduated from Elkader High School on May 26, 1942.

Mildred was united in marriage to Clarence Hoffman on May 3, 1944, by Rev. Paul Kitterer at the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Two daughters were born to this union.

Her early years were spent as a farm wife; later she worked as a CNA at Scenic Acres Residential Care, also serving on the Board of Directors at the facility. Mildred was an active member of Peace Church, where she belonged to Women’s Fellowship, Deborah Circle and most recently served on the call committee to obtain a new minister. Mildred was a former member of the Readlander’s Club, Central Hospital Auxiliary, Garnavillo Historical Society and the Garnavillo Community Boosters. She was a volunteer for Substance Abuse Services, where she won the Govenor’s Award.

In her spare time, Mildred enjoyed traveling, including trips to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Branson, Nashville, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Colorado, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Williamsburg, VA. She also enjoyed many bus trips to local tourist sites.

Cooking and entertaining family and friends was her favorite activity. She also found time for crocheting, gardening, collecting dishes and playing cards. Mildred loved all animals; she especially enjoyed her pets and feeding the birds.

Survivors include her daughters, Jeanne (Ivan) Meisner of Farmersburg and Joyce (Craig) Cummings of Willilamsburg, VA; granddaughter, Becky (fiance’ John Persinger) of McGregor, IA; grandson, Rick Meiser of Garnavillo; great-granddaughter Sara Meisner of McGregor; great-grandson Peyton Meisner of Monona; sister-in-law, Phyllis Gruel of Bonduel, WI, brother-in-law, Wesley Kupsky of Cato, WI, ten nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1940; her mother in 1976; her husband Clarence in 1976; her sister Lanida Kupsky in 1977; her brother Milton Sommer in 1994; grandson Randy Meisner in 1973; grandson Rodney Meisner in 2002 and step-father Otto Schultz in 1989.
