Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. May 31, 2010 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before service time at the church on Tuesday, with the funeral services being held at 10:30 a.m. June 1, 2010 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa. Interment was at the East Side Cemetery, Elkader.

Dorothy Tolcou, 86, of Elkader, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born May 19, 1924, to Arthur Carl and Eva Grace (Arnold) Huebsch, on their farm, rural Strawberry Point.

She attended school at Strawberry Point, and graduated with the class of 1941. Dorothy then went on to Mercy School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, where she obtained her Registered Nursing Degree. Dorothy did her nurse’s training at Jefferson Barracks, VA Hospital, St. Louis, MO, and it was there that she met her future husband. She was united in marriage to Samuel Theodore Tolcou on December 16, 1945. The couple moved to Elkader to make their home in 1948. Dorothy worked as an RN at Central Community Hospital in Elkader until she retired from the hospital in 1986.

Dorothy has been an active member of Peace United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Peacemakers. She was also a member of the local P.E.O and Questers in Elkader. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the Carter House Museum.

Survivors include her children, Patty (Chris Whitmore) Walker of Ankeny, IA, Ken (Nancy) Tolcou of San Diego, CA, Becky (Tim) Olson of St. Olaf; five grandchildren, Brigette (Greg) Hansen, Gretchen Walker, Mallory (Bill) Kuhse, Seth Olson, Adrienna Olson; two great-grandchildren, Sam and Ben Hansen, another great grand-child due any day; a sister-in-law, Viola Tolcou of St. Louis, MO; five nephews and two nieces in MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on November 14, 1990.
