BISHOP, WHITCOMB, LUCKE, BREDESEN

Decorah, Ia. - Arthur Clay Bishop, 57, editor and publisher of the Decorah Public Opinion, local weekly, since December, 1930, died at the Decorah hospital Sunday where he was a patient the past week. He had been in poor health the past year. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the C.K. Preuss Auditorium on the Luther College campus with the Rev. Alfred Bredesen, pastor of the Glenwood Lutheran church officiating, according to arrangements completed Monday. Burial will be at Elkader. All Decorah business places will be closed during the services.

Mr. Bishop was born May 14, 1883 at Clayton in Clayton county, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram C. Bishop. When he was a year old, his parents moved to Clermont, returning to Clayton two years later where his father taught school. Later the father was elected superintendent of Clayton County rural schools and in 1887 the family moved to Elkader. The father established the Clayton County Democrat there, a weekly which he published until his death in 1921.

The son, learning the newspaper business in his father's plant, moved to Guttenberg when he was 18 years old and managed and edited the Guttenberg Press for two years. He then purchased the Bloomington, Wis., Record, publishing it for 11 years. He also served as Bloomington postmaster for four years. Following the sale of the Record, he moved to Decorah.

He was married 30 years ago to Miss Ella Whitcomb at Milwaukee, who survives with three children: Dr. Harry Bishop of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Karl, publisher of the Choteau Acantha at Choteau, Mont. and Barbara, a student at the University of Iowa. Also surviving are his mother, who lives at Elkader; a brother, Max, of Elkader; and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Lucke of Havre, Mont. His son Karl, arrived here an hour after Mr. Bishop died, making the trip by airplane.

Mr. Bishop was elected president of the Northeastern Iowa Press Association two months ago. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Winneshiek County Fair Association. He was regarded as a community leader and was a loyal supporter of Luther College here. He was a member of the Masonic and Elks lodges, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Oneota Golf and Country Club.
