Mary Catherine Sass was born in Mecklenburg Schwerien, Germany, August 10, 1842. She came to the United States, May 10, 1867. The following year on Feb. 10th she was united in marriage with Michael Roth of Clayton county, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Mrs. H.W. Buddenburg of Castalia, Mrs. Louis Henkes and Ed Roth of Monona, and two children which died in infancy. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Mrs. Roth passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.W. Buddenburg, on April 1, 1928, owing to the infirmities of age.
Her married life was spent on farms in Clayton and Allamakee counties until the death of her husband, Feb. 22, 1898, since which the remaining years of her life were spent with her children.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Voelk of Castalia on April 3rd, her six grandsons officiating as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Gooding cemetery in Clayton county.
