Landsgard, George E. 1891-1962

George E. Landsgard, son of Esten and Sarah (Gisleson) Landsgard, was born on August 1, 1891, in Clayton county, Iowa. He was baptized September 2, 1891 and confirmed on November 13, 1904 at the Marion Lutheran Church.

He entered the United States Army on September 18, 1917. During the 14 months he served overseas he saw considerable action on the French fronts, including the battles of Argonne Woods and Chateau Thierry. He was one of the soldiers whose names were inscribed on the "Golden Book" of the soldiers of Verdun. He received his discharge on August 7, 1919.

On January 4, 1923, he was married to Rosena Torkelson and to this union was born three sons and two daughters. They made their home on a farm near Lansing, until 1929 when they moved to a farm near Gunder and he resided in this community until the time of his death.

He passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the home of a neighbor on June 28, 1962, at the age of 70 years, 10 months, and 28 days.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine, who died in infancy; his parents, three brothers, Oscar, Arthur and Harold and a sister, Sophie.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Rosena; three sons, Orlan and Gordon of St. Olaf, and Maurice of Postville; a daughter, Geraldine (Mrs. Leo Friederich) of Elgin, a brother Arthur of Elgin, a sister, Hulda (Mrs. Oscar Lindley) of Osage, eight grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was an active and lifelong member of the Lutheran church and served in various offices. he was a member of the Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post No. 375 of Clermont and earned a 40-year membership star.

Funeral services were held at the Marion Lutheran Church on Sunday, July 1, 1962 at 2:00 p.m. His body was laid to rest in the family lot at the Marion cemetery. The Rev. H. J. Mathre officiated. Graveside military rites were conducted by members of the American Legion Post No. 375, Clermont
