Flossie Mildred Gisleson, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Stemmer) Refle, was born June 6, 1907 near Littleport, Iowa. She died July 19, 1993 at her home in Monona. She was 86.
She was baptized Oct. 6, 1907 in Hope Lutheran Church at Littleport by the Rev. F. Linnenbueger and was confirmed there on Aug. 20, 1922 by the Rev. P. E. Stolz. She graduated from Littleport High School and attended Normal training classes at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She taught in the rural schools in Clayton County for several years. On Sept. 3, 1929 she married Henry Cornelius Gisleson in Minneapolis, Minn. She was employed in the food serve department of Community Memorial Hospital in Postville and Northgate Manor in Waukon. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Luana and the Women of the ELCA.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry, who died in 1973; a son, Marlow "Red" Gisleson, who died in 1979; four brothers, Walter, Harry, George and William Refle; and two sisters, Sarah Refle and Josie Brink.
She is survived by one son, Romandus "Sam" (Joan) Gisleson of Luana; two daughters, Madonna (Howard) Stumme of Postville and JoLena (Harvey) Levenhagen of Monona; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Helen Gisleson Meyer of Monona; a brother-in-law, Clifford (Betty) Gisleson of Elgin; and three sisters-in-law, LaVila Gisleson of Elgin; Nina Refle of Littleport; and Florence Refle of Dubuque.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 23, 1993 at 1:30 p.m. in St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, the Rev. Eugene Kramer officiating. The organist was Helmuth Landt. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Union Cemetery, rural Littleport. Casketbearers were Dean Refle, Mark Stumme, Dwight Hanson, Michael Gisleson, George Brink, David Gisleson and Stephan Levenhagen. Honorary casketbearers were Clifford Gisleson and Joe Brink.
