Helen Johnson, 85, of Elkader, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Kingston Court in Elkader following a sudden illness. She was born January 24, 1924, in Elkader to Charles and Ella (Ihde) Glawe. Helen was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. She attended country school.
Helen was united in marriage to Eldo Johnson at Zion Lutheran Church parsonage in Clayton Center.
Following their marriage, Eldo and Helen lived on a farm by Clayton Center for over fifty years. It was a Century Farm. Eldo and Helen were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. They farmed until moving to Cedar Rapids for a few years before returning to Elkader in November of 2005. Helen was a homemaker who loved living and working on the farm. She was very dedicated to her family and loved spending time with all of them. She was a wonderful cook and took great pleasure in taking care of her garden. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. Helen also enjoyed music, dancing and also looked forward to traveling with her family.Survivors include three children, Arlene (Gerald) Reimer, Elkader, Eugene (Sherry) Johnson, Swisher and Geraldine "Geri" (John) Hauschild, Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren, Cindy (Matt) Mueller, Elkader, Lesa (Jim) Moose, Monona, JoEllen (Steve) Middlekauff, Cedar Rapids, Jason (Jacque) Hauschild, Cedar Rapids, Jennie Hauschild, Astoria, NY, Joshua Hauschild, Cedar Rapids, Erin (Greg) Joseph, Hiawatha, Kristy Johnson, Indianapolis, IN, Heidi (John) Wegener, Cedar Falls and Sara (Nathanael) Brandt, Cedar Rapids; twenty great-grandchildren, Justin (Kelsey) Mueller, Jessica Mueller, Jarred and Jordan Moose, Joergen, Jacob, Jenna and Jaelynn Hauschild, Nicholas, Jackson,Lucas and Emmerson Middlekauff, Mackenzie and Megan Joseph, Andrew, Aleah and Javan Wegener and Hannah, Alyssa and Emily Brandt; a sister-in-law, Berniece Johnson, Elkader.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on February 10, 2007 and one brother, Karl Glawe.
Funeral services were Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, with Rev. Ludy Lechner officiating. Burial followed at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center.
Music was provided by Arlene Reimer, Organist and Phyllis Wilcox, Organist.
Casket Bearers were Jason Hauschild, Joshua Hauschild, Matt Mueller, Jim Moose, John Wegener, Nathanel Brandt, Steve Middlekoff, Gregg Joseph.
A family eulogy was delivered by JoEllen Middlekauff.
"A mother holds her children's hands for awhile... their hearts forever".
