William Gehring died at the Elkader Care Center June 18, 1992. He was born in Elgin, Iowa, November 19, 1897 to Frank and Mary Ann (Kimpson) Gehring. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1915. He then farmed in the Elgin area until 1923 when he was employed as a rural mail carrier in the Elkader area, rural route # 3. He served the U. S. Postal Service for 41 years and 11 months, until his retirement December 30, 1964.
On December 31, 1918 he was united in marriage to Nettie Johnson, St. Olaf, Iowa. To this union one son was born. They resided in Elkader. Nettie preceded him in death, December 13, 1957; a sister, Alma, 1977. He continued living in Elkader his remaining years until he suffered a stroke during November 1989.
Survivors include: son, Lowell L. (Betty) of Monona, Iowa; one granddaughter, Jeneen (James) Pendry of Prunedale, California; two great granddaughters, Jina (James) White of San Jose, California and Joleigh Pendry of San Jose, California. Memorial services were held Monday, June 22, 1992 at 11 a. m. at Leonard-Witt Funeral Home with Rev. Lance A. Bentley officiating. Burial was in the East Side Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.
