Robert W. Garms, 83, of Volga, died Sunday, December 7, at the Central Community Hospital, Elkader. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 10, 1980 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, with the Rev. Harold Ward officiating. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of services.

Robert William Garms, the son of John C. and Anna (Schrader) Garms, was born August 6, 1897 in Clayton County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. December 11, 1923, he was married to Harriet Russell and they farmed near Monona until 1950 when they moved to Volga. He was a partner with Joseph Walch in the ownership of a hearse and was a driver for Schultz's Funeral Home from 1927 until 1944. He was a retired Volga businessman and served as mayor of the town for 16 years. He also was an employee of the Dittmer Motor Co., Elkader. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Volga, having served as a Deacon and a member of the building committee when their new church was built.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Catherine) Waskow and Mrs. Alfred (Selma) David; one brother, Rudolph; his son-in-law, Edward E. Looney; and two grandsons, Mark Garms and James Garms.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet, two sons, Robert C. of Dubuque and Russell E. of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Edward E. (Gloria) Looney of Postville and Mrs. Russell (JoAnne) Peterson of Waterloo; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and his brother Walter of McGregor.
