Lorraine V. Walters
McGREGOR, Iowa -- Lorraine V. Walters, 89, of McGregor, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Great River Care Center, McGregor, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at First Congregational UCC, McGregor. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, McGregor. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1920, in Marquette, daughter of Bertram and Violet (Goltz) Schott. She was baptized and confirmed at the Marquette Methodist Church and graduated from Marquette High School in 1932.

She married Burton Walters, Sr. on Oct. 2, 1943, in Reno, Nev.; he preceded her in death in 1979. They lived in Sausalito, Calif., before returning to Iowa.

She worked as a telephone operator in McGregor, Norfolk, Va., and Prairie du Chien, Wis., until the mid-1960s. She also worked as a cook at the school and at the McGregor library as a secretary for Dr. Smith and worked at the North Iowa Times.

Surviving are three children, Burton (Donna) Walters Jr., Richard Walters and Marsha (Daniel) Bickel, all of McGregor; four grandchildren, Burton Walters III, Terri (Robert) Wall, and Jeff and Jenna Bickel; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Curtis Wall; two siblings, Charles (Lora) Schott, of Minnetonka, Minn., and Donald (Betty) Schott, of Savanna, Ill.; and two sisters-in-law, Tammy Hazlett, of Monona, and Esther Schott, of Hopkinton.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Richard and William Schott.
