Leona Anna Christina Froning died Monday, Sept. 23, 1991, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 25, 1991, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Pastor Terry D. Hudson officiated. Organist was Florence Evans. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Donald Sass, Norbert Lembke, Edward Sass, Dale Kurth, Ramon Sass, Calvin Henkes, George Howe and Lorraine Lenth. Schultz's Funeral Home in Monona was in charge of arrangements.
Leona Froning was born Oct. 3, 1907, in Monona township, Clayton County, IA, to parents, George and Louise Suelter Sass. She was baptized Dec. 15, 1907, by Rev. Wappler and confirmed Sept. 10, 1922, by Rev. Daugs at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona.
She received her education in Monona public schools, graduating from high school in 1926. On Jan. 23, 1928, she married John Froning in Oelwein. They had two daughters. The couple farmed near Oelwein until 1944. They moved to a farm east of Monona where they farmed until 1969, at which time they moved to Monona. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Goodwill Circle.
Preceding her in death were her parents; son-in-law, Richard Cooper; four brothers, William, George, Hubert and Eldo; and four sisters, Ella Brase, Meta Sass, Lucy Sass and Mildred Lembke.
Surviving are her husband, John; two daughters and son-in-law, LaVon and Harland Kottman, Monona; and Donna Cooper, Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
