Audrey E. Whipka, 85, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully Friday, June 20, 2008 at her home, surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 24th at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Entombment will be in Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport, Iowa.
The former Audrey E. McGowen was born October 29, 1922 in Marquette, Iowa, the daughter of William and Bell Singelton McGowen. She married Melvin A. Whipka on February 18, 1961. She retired from Oscar Mayer after 27 years, where she was a Union Steward. After leaving Oscar Mayer, she became a Shaklee supervisor and had her business in her home for 28 years. Because of her seminars and lectures with Shaklee, she was awarded an honorary degree from Coe College, Cedar Rapids.
She was a very active member of St. Anthony’s Church, Davenport, and would deliver meals and Holy Communion to the elderly. She was also the president of the Catholic Women’s League (Daughters of Isabella).
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Melvin; daughters, Nancy (Bill) Bolton of Marquette, Iowa and Lori Martinaz of Davenport; sons, William (Judy) Sawvell and Jerry Sawvell, both of Alabama; nine beloved grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, five brothers, and two grandsons, David Bolton and Troy Sawvell.
